Meanwhile, with regard to the strange news release I alluded to last night, in which the Conservatives (or Grewal himself) made an explanation available to the media for the missing sections—or spliced sections—of tape in question, the CBC has added a reference to that in a revised story. The Toronto Star made a passing reference to it, making it seem every bit like the Conservatives’ explanation is bogus.
I have personally concluded that the explanation seems plausible—that tapes themselves were not altered—but in making copies available to the media, technical glitches (as a result of amateurish handling of this matter by the Conservatives) has resulted in making that appear to be so.
Tapes were converted into CDs by computer, according to the news release, and in so doing, glitches occurred. Indeed, if they’re anything like me, there’d be lots of “glitches” and “squeaks” and “peeks” and “blank spots” and “whatevers” in the resulting CDs. But again, the tapes themselves, which are now in the hands of the RCMP, were not necessarily altered.
