So much for the Red Book. Oh yeah and honesty.

The Winnipeg Sun has a good editorial this morning reminding us about the Chretien/Martin Liberal Party “Red Book”.  You know—the one where they promised “ethics” and “transparency”?  (Hat tip: Ross M.)

[…] But therein lies the trouble with the whole Grewal affair. For the past few weeks, the public spotlight has exposed Grewal as a less-than-savoury character, whose judgment in handling the tapes (first releasing only an excerpt, then a copy that showed signs of tampering) was abysmal, to say nothing of the murky reasons he gave for making them in the first place. No wonder he went on “stress leave” last week; he should have stepped down. Still, whatever Grewal’s failings, they do not by association clear Murphy, who has refused comment since the incident broke, or Dosanjh—whose charges that the tapes were sliced, diced and doctored seem to stretch credulity, given that there are hours of conversation at issue.

A government that truly cared about ethics would ensure its commissioner had all the power he needs to investigate this case.
