PTBC reader writes to Liberal Party asking for precise position on American deserters; gets answer

This relates to the story of U.S. Iraq war deserters who are seeking to live out their cowardly lives in Canada amongst fellow pantywaist anti-war peaceniks and sundry liberals here.  The Liberals’ “Bare Ass” Bob Rae spoke out (on the CBC, naturally, as well as in an op-ed in the Toronto Star) against sending them back, and said Canada should offer refuge to U.S. military deserters.  Say it with me now:  Hideous fool;  Liberal.

I wrote a couple of blog entries, my latest of which suggested to you that you read Douglas Bland’s op-ed in the National Post“MUST READ: Douglas Bland: “Does Bob Rae endorse lawful desertion from the Canadian Forces?”” (see excerpt and a link, there); My earlier blog entry explained the Federal Court ruling sending one of them back to the U.S..

This all spurred a PTBC reader to write to the Liberal Party asking exactly what their position is, so we can put it on the record.

SHOCK:  They answered with no answer whatsoever.  They covered a page of writing with gobbledygook.  They don’t even HAVE a policy, it seems.  Maybe they’re not done polling the far-left voters of Toronto and of course Nelson, B.C., yet.  Maybe they need input from the CBC first.

But get a load of the highlighted line in the Liberal Party position:  In typical liberal-left fashion, they expose their sense of superiority over America and Americans and smugly suggest that apparently, countries like the United States are “less fortunate” than our own.  They seem to say they have to carefully consider refugee claims from the U.S., just as any other “less fortunate” country!  Dear God.

Dear [hidden by Joel]:

Thank you for your letter concerning American war resisters seeking refugee status in Canada.

This is a matter that inspires thoughtful and passionate opinions. Working in the House of Commons, Liberal Members of Parliament will continue to study and debate the complex issues at play.

As you know, the war resisters in question are all U.S. citizens and volunteers in that nation’s armed forces.  To protest the presence of their own country’s military in Iraq, they are asking the Canadian government to grant them status as refugees – the same status granted to thousands of immigrants seeking protection from political, religious and ethnic-based persecution in many countries less fortunate than our own.

Of paramount concern to the Liberal Party of Canada in this matter must be the integrity of Canada’s refugee determination system. As a signatory to the 1951 UN Convention, we have an obligation to protect genuine refugees, a responsibility we take very seriously. The Liberal Party believes that everyone who makes a claim for refugee protection has the right to a fair assessment of their claim and that each refugee claim is assessed on its own merit, based on each individual’s circumstances and the country of alleged persecution.

In the coming weeks, the Liberal Caucus will continue to vigorously examine this issue so as to ensure justice is done for those many thousands of refugees coming to Canada every year from around the world.

Again, I thank you for your interest in this important issue.

So I hope their policy is clear now.
