Eco-hypocrites

By TOM BRODBECK

I love the hypocrisy coming out of the Suzuki Foundation during this federal election campaign.

The frog counters at the foundation are tracking how much each political party is spewing in carbon emissions during the election race and reporting on the worst offenders.

Apparently Jack Layton and the NDP are the worst emitters, spewing some 383 tonnes of carbon into the air as of Sept. 30. Stephen Harper’s Tories are right behind the NDP with 317 tonnes of emissions.

And the Liberals are third with 284 tonnes.

The Suzuki Foundation is monitoring the party’s emissions because they want to get the message out that parties should be doing everything possible to reduce their carbon output while on tour.

‘STRONG SIGNAL’

Pierre Sadik from the foundation said last month they understand election campaigns are going to result in some emissions.

But he said parties should be finding new and creative ways of reducing their travel, limiting personal appearances and using more video links and the Internet to get their message out.

He said while travel is necessary during campaigns, leaders should be using the train or hybrid vehicles whenever possible.

“It would send a strong signal to Canadians that you are walking the talk and not just talking it,” he told The Canadian Press in September.

Ah, walking the talk.

‘WALK THE TALK’

I notice David Suzuki himself didn’t “walk the talk” when he did his 40-city, rock star tour of Canada last year.

Remember that one? The chief frog counter driving all over hell’s half-acres in his own private diesel tour bus?

That’s right. Not a train or a hybrid vehicle as his foundation wants everybody else to travel in.

A bus. A diesel bus with a bunch of crew members on board. Not a bio-diesel bus, either. Straight up diesel—no ice.  …

I documented that oh-so-totally non-political, non-partisan eco-tour when it happened and it’s fascinating reading even if I do say so myself.  Here’s the eco-bus itself—and note the graphics.  It’s why I called it his “campaign bus”.
