OTTAWA — Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day has favoured former police and corrections officers for new appointments to the National Parole Board since the Harper government took office in 2006, government records show.

Of the 36 new members Mr. Day has named to the board since he became minister that year, 23 are retired police officers or former federal and provincial corrections staff.

The preference for former police and prison personnel is drawing criticism from opposition MPs and a senior executive with the John Howard Society, who accuse the government of extending a get-tough justice ideology into corrections and rehabilitation…

There’s about a thousand comments but here are the first few:

1.    Clive Gingell from Canada writes:

OMG. Putting those who have personal experience dealing with criminals on the Parole Board is ‘ideological’?

I suppose having handwringers and soft-touches (mis)-running the show isn’t ideological?

  2.    Counterspinner tells the truth from Canada writes:
This is what the parole board should be made from – people who are knowledgeable about the criminal system. Good for Stockwell Day! Shame on liberals for stocking the parole board with bleeding heart liberals. No wonder criminals are being let loose early and endangering the public….

Another real positive move by the Conservativess to get tough on Crime. GOOD GOOD move!

    This is disturbing?

What I find disturbing is that the LPC find this disturbing.

    Who were the LPC appointing?
Recreational therapists? Masseuses? Tim Horton’s cashiers?
What were their qualifications? The ability to sing Kumbaya in 3 part harmony?
    A propensity to snuggle?
The ability to shed a tear?

Somebody should ask Jane Creba who she thinks should be appointed.
Like she ever got that choice.
