Follow-up on flags behind Gomery during statement

I blogged yesterday, including a photograph, about why it was that Justice Gomery gave his report to the nation on television yesterday with the Canadian flag directly behind him, and the flag of Quebec right beside that.

Gomery with Canada and Quebec flags behind him
I screen-captured this yesterday, live.

Because of course the cameras were zoomed-in as they should be, all we could see throughout the entire broadcast was the Canada flag, and the Quebec flag.  And of course all the still photographs for newspapers and such included that same close-up photo —Canada and Quebec flags with Gomery sitting in front.

I simply asked why that was.  I mean this whole whitewash by the Liberal Party is that the Party’s scandal all ensued as a result of their ever-so-earnest and benevolent altruistic desire to keep Quebec in Canada, those little angels, aren’t they great, blah blah blah, spin spin spin.  Now during the official statement to the nation on the findings of the Gomery report, we see Justice Gomery sitting at a table with the Canada and Quebec flags behind him.

It seemed rather contrived to me.

So I looked up the official flag display protocol for Canada, and apparently it doesn’t support the flags having been set up the way they were—not even close.  So they were set up that way on purpose, against protocol.  And this was an important, austere national event of considerable importance, so I think this should be examined more closely.

Here is the protocol for displaying flags against a wall according to the Liberal government’s own web site:

protocol for displaying flags against a wall

Key:
1. National Flag of Canada
2. Ontario (1867)
3. Quebec (1867)
4. Nova Scotia (1867)
5. New Brunswick (1867)
6. Manitoba (1870)
7. British Columbia (1871)
8. Prince Edward Island (1873)
9. Saskatchewan (1905)
10. Alberta (1905)
11. Newfoundland (1949)
12. Northwest Territories (1870)
13. Yukon (1898)
14. Nunavut (1999)

Clearly it should be Canada first and last, and between that, the provinces in order of their joining confederation.  But we can clearly see that wasn’t the way that this very historic and official setting was arranged.  Here’s two pictures from Reuters demonstrating what I’m saying and, indeed, the desired effect, I suspect:  Canada and Quebec.  It’s a wonder there’s no Liberal Party flag just there.

What we should see right behind him is: numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 from the key above. (Manitoba, BC, PEI, and Saskatchewan).

What we do see is (from left) either Manitoba or Ontario, Canada, Quebec, New Brunswick, BC, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland.  In other words, arranged in a way that somebody chose rather than according to official protocol.

I’ll leave it to you to decide why that happened, but use the amount of trust you deem worthy given the situation.
