Developing story: Canwest newspapers: BANKRUPT; FOR SALE

…Just waiting for CBC to announce their plans to take them over.  Or some other government division.  Surely the Conservative government, which owns and fully supports the CBC, knew this might happen…. and just kept on supporting the CBC anyway… even as it competed against this privately-owned company…. hey here’s a question I’ve asked before:  What kind of government competes against its own citizens in business for profits —especially in the forum of ideas and politics and news and entertainment?

…Developing…

Filing for bankruptcy are 10 newspapers including Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Ottawa Citizen, the Leader-Post, The Star Phoenix, The Province, The Vancouver Sun, the Times Colonist, and the Windsor Star.

And all those newspapers’ ONLINE presences.  All are up for sale, including the National Post.

The National Post reports:

…a bid today by senior lenders made up of a consortium of Canadian banks, as well as a court filing for creditor protection.

The publishing group has engaged RBC Capital Markets to seek out other possible buyers for the chain.  …

The bid from five of Canada’s largest banks is for Canwest Limited Partnership, which holds the National Post, 10 major city dailies—Victoria Times Colonist, Vancouver Sun, Vancouver’s The Province, Edmonton Journal, the Calgary Herald, Saskatoon StarPhoenix, Regina Leader-Post, Windsor Star, Ottawa Citizen and Montreal’s The Gazette—as well as 26 community newspapers, and associated online and mobile properties.

I heard the story being reported on the state-owned, taxpayer-funded, socialism-reliant CBC, which by shear coincidence competes against citizen-owned news media.  Yes, competes them and us for attention, for advertisers, for income, for viewers/readers, for blog comments, and so on.  They glibly, blithely reported it without even a hint of irony or guilt.

Meanwhile, the CBC is doing just dandy.

UPDATE:
I just read some of the overjoyed comments on the state-owned, socialism-reliant taxpayer-funded CBC story about this.  They’re mostly celebrating this like they celebrated Rush Limbaugh having a heart attack, or when 9/11 happened.  They mostly deem Canwest and all their papers as “right wing”, facts notwithstanding, apparently on the sound basis that Canwest isn’t state-owned and state-run like the CBC.  Only to a communist is it “right-wing” simply because it’s privately-owned.

It’s like you’ve left Canada and entered Cuba.  It’s like attending a festival of drunk communists who have only ever gotten their news from …the CBC.
