Canadians falsely view Albertans as alienated rednecks, Conservative Premier Ralph Klein says. Well, liberals do, at any rate. Then again, liberals view things way differently than normal people.
TORONTO (CP) – Alberta Premier Ralph Klein says Canadians have a false impression of Albertans as a bunch of alienated, redneck cowpokes.
But in fact, Klein said Wednesday, the fast-growing province is a diversified, economic success story that is committed to Canada and deserves to be recognized for contributing far more economically to the rest of the country than it gets back.
Amid questions about his views on privatizing health care, the plain-speaking, often controversial premier kicked off an image-building visit to Ontario and Quebec by suggesting the province is not getting the respect or recognition it deserves.
“The image many people have of today’s Alberta is one of two major cities surrounded by a whole bunch of cowboys and roughnecks, or red necks, and horses and pickup trucks and pump jacks,” Klein told the Empire Club of Canada. […]
That last sentence made me chuckle.
