Bush the clear debate winner

Through sheer common sense, a clear understanding of issues, and by truly believing that what he’s saying is right, George W. Bush was the clear winner in the first presidential debate of the 2004 election.

Bush showed that he has little trouble verbalizing what he’s saying and it’s because he believes it and knows it to be right deep down in his gut.  It comes from the heart and soul, and it comes from an understanding of good and evil, right and wrong, what works and what doesn’t.  And from a conviction in the belief that people—all people, including Iraqis—want freedom and that they deserve it.  And from an understanding of, and devotion to, his duty as President of the United States that he loves. And, not least, a refusal to turn over his country’s national security interests to those who represent other countries, and other interests.

When you know and understand something, it’s not necessary to memorize slogans and platitudes as written by handlers and rehearsed beforehand ad nauseam—instead the words come naturally, and sound exactly natural.

People often remarked at how Ronald Reagan also spoke and gripped his audience—mostly off the cuff—and it’s for the same reason: he believed it, he knew it to be right.  Answers to supposedly “tough” questions are therefore easy to come by—no fidgeting necessary, no flip-flops, no equivocation, no twisting of facts and no obfuscation.

Kerry is a plastic man, yearning only to be president—not because of conviction or firm beliefs or values that he holds dear, but just because.  And that’s why he lost.
