I’ve long asked: How could Liberal immigration minister Judy Sgro not have known that the Indian pizza pie man Harjit Singh was a fugitive wanted on an immigration arrest warrant? That’s what a couple of Conservative MPs are now asking the Ethics Commissioner who’s investigating this Sgro case.
Conservative MP Diane Ablonczy asked [Ethics Commissioner ] Shapiro in November to look into reports that Singh, being sought for deportation to India, was regularly seen at Sgro’s Toronto election headquarters last spring delivering pizza.
Singh, under a deportation order for more than 10 years, spoke more than once to senior Sgro staffers disclosing his status and asking for assistance from the minister but no one notified authorities, Ablonczy complained in her letter, which was made public Thursday.
“If there was (deportation) dodging and no one turned him in, that suggests the minister and her staff were complicit in this fellow avoiding the law,” Ablonczy said in an interview Thursday.
“If he was promised permits for pizza, that’s influence peddling.”
[…] Ablonczy said blame also lies with Prime Minister Paul Martin for seeming to ignore serious allegations.
He knew this “ethics tsunami was coming, and what did he do? Nothing.”
