You mean Canadians actually got ticked about a Liberal action?

I only blogged about this this morning.  Now, already, the Liberals are backing down.  Must be an election in the air or a shortage of Scotch in the Royal Parliamentary Liquor Cabinet division of the Liberal Party.

Ottawa to re-think gas allowance

OTTAWA—A public outcry has forced the federal government to reconsider a hike in mileage rates for MPs and federal workers.

Word of the new rates – to compensate for high gasoline prices – drew angry calls and e-mails from constituents upset that they aren’t getting any relief.

Treasury Board President Reg Alcock says he’s asked his staff to reconsider the new per-kilometre rate paid for personal use of cars.

The guidelines for federal employees were updated to 50.6 cents a kilometre from 46 cents because of recent price hikes.

I’m amazed on two fronts:  (1) Canadians actually got ticked about something the Liberals did (and why this, of all things?);  and (2) The Liberals didn’t insinuate that “Canadians are stupid, stupid people who don’t know anything” and that they’re actually backing down instead of being their arrogant elitist selves.

I found this picture which represents the Liberals these days.  It’s of Prime Minister Martin, of course, and I think he looks like a mixture of bored, very old and tired, strangely embarrassed, embattled, and mostly, completely freaked out.
