I’ve been suffering from the flu for a week or more. Woe is me. I mean it’s not so bad that I can’t have a cocktail — it’s Friday, so duh — but my brain has been in a fog, and the coughing, oh the coughing. My wife too. So it’s real fun around here.
So in lieu of writing in my usual faux brainy fashion, below is a roundup of some of the posts on X I did this week in between fits of coughing and blowing my nose. These are all replies to others’ posts as it turns out.
Some of them drew out nutters, and I sometimes engage with them because it tends to expose them for who and what they are to the world. This is an important function of X, methinks. The barbaric terrorist attack on Israel and the Israeli attempts to crush the terrorists have brought out a lot of this. It’s good we now have X under leadership that allows people to expose themselves for who and what they are. Even if it does turn out they’re rabid antisemites who get themselves banned, or utter idiots, or confused fence-sitters. We need to draw them out so we know who they are. By name, if possible.
I’ve thought about what I see on X a lot. It’s an intriguing place.
But it’s getting to the point where I don’t know whether — or how — to engage with some of the replies to my posts on X. Not because I’m afraid of stirring up the mud, clearly, since that’s mostly what I do. No, it’s because I’m honestly (honestly!) not sure if some of these people are legitimately suffering from some sort of sociological or psychological malady, a learning disability, or a drug issue. Or they’re in a cult like the genderwang cult or woke cult and actually need help getting out.
I certainly wouldn’t call a known mental illness sufferer an “idiot” as I do some of the people I know to be either plain dumb-dumbs or making out as one in my replies. I wouldn’t mock or scream at or even be sarcastic with them. Even the cult members. I’d just be kind and compassionate. So it’s important for me to know who’s who.
But choosing to use nothing but soft gentle words, kindness, and compassion to everyone instead of offering serious pushback in a serious argument with serious people about serious matters would be unproductive, and might even make me appear to be suffering from a malady myself.
Like there is this one guy who argues with me all the time on X. He knows nothing about the subjects he speaks to, and he practically acknowledges that, and yet, as I see so often, he has Very Strong Opinions about the subject he knows nothing about. When at last I exasperatedly call him out (sometimes bruskly!) for being too lazy to read about the subject he knows nothing about — and I supplied the reading links! — I call him a “lazy-ass” or some such thing. Well he goes ahead and “likes” that rather nasty reply of mine
. I think this is a malady!
I see this a lot with the Canadian healthcare debate (see this post by @CityNewsVAN that I replied to — https://twitter.com/CityNewsVAN/status/1728088595167318286 — read through all the replies to me and the replies concerning what I wrote. In the end, I got blocked by the know-nothing. She apparently likes knowing only what she knows (which is progressive-left nonsense, exclusively) and doesn’t want to know or learn or read or hear anything new.
I think in many cases it amounts to them yearning to be a “team player” — as in “I’ve always voted NDP, their talking points are all I listen to and all I really know, and no matter what the truth is or what any alternative point of view, I’m stickin’ with them, damn the torpedoes.” Damn the truth, damn the better alternatives for Canada, damn the fact that their ideas are wreckin’ the joint… Go team!
So what to do? Just tease them out I guess. Then apply my fearsome retorts accordingly.
