Two things to watch

Cinnamon Stillwell emailed me to give me a heads-up on a program she happened to see on her local PBS station, (in the process admitting that she watches public television the odd time), called “Stranded Yanks: A Diary Between Friends”.  The “Friends” are Canadians.  Cinnamon says “it should be a mandatory viewing in both countries”.

I found that it will be shown on one of the PBS stations (KCTS – Seattle) we get through our Star Choice Satellite service (which also offers Fox News Channel!), tomorrow at 9:00 PM PDT.  The VHS is also available at Amazon.com (not .ca).

Here’s the blurb from PBS:

On September 11, 2001, for the first time in history, American airspace closed. Immediately following the terrorist attacks, 252 international flights carrying nearly 44,000 dazed and frightened passengers—most of them Americans traveling home—were suddenly grounded in Canada. But what began as a frightening and frustrating experience for these passengers ended as a heart-warming testament to human compassion and the power of friendship in the face of adversity. Canadians opened their hearts and homes to those in need, pitching in to help make the passengers feel welcome. Inspiring stories of hope and unity emerged. Combining footage from those harrowing days with detailed personal accounts, compelling photos and powerful reunions, ‘Stranded Yanks’ documents the five-day period from September 11 to September 16, when strangers became neighbors and a friendship between nations grew even stronger.

The other thing to watch, if only to help, is the big Katrina telethon on Friday night, which most every U.S. station, and now most every Canadian network—will be broadcasting.

It will be broadcast on CTV, Global Television, and CHUM’s A-Channel and Citytv stations on Friday Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. ET.

The program “Shelter From the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast” will be a special commercial-free simulcast.

Funds raised will support Red Cross relief efforts in the U.S. Gulf Coast region. It will be broadcast in 95 countries around the world.
