Apparently the photographers were all positioned in that one spot and no other angle was feasible.  This happens quite often in the art of news photography.  For example, it’s almost impossible to take a picture of Liberal Paul Martin without a ha-YUGE Canadian flag behind him, with a Quebec flag nearby. 

The headline in this accompanying story, which I figure they wrote mainly to do just that—accompany the photo they wanted to display —was:  “Poll: Liberals Have The Lead

I guess we should be lucky the headline wasn’t “Conservatives Fail Miserably To Make Even The Slightest Gain Because They’re So So Stupid—Scary and Stupid!”
