The very thought of it makes people jittery

An article in the Edmonton Sun reports that on state-run CBC yesterday, discgraced jewel thief Svend Robinson dicked around with a potential political comeback.

One could almost sense the aggitation?/excitement? the reporter who typed out the story in their online version was feeling, as the hedline read exactly like this: “Robinson hints at political comebackkj”.

OTTAWA—Disgraced former NDP MP Svend Robinson is battling his own “demons” and pondering a possible political comeback. In his first media interview since he “snapped” and swiped an expensive diamond ring from an auction sale, the long-time British Columbia MP told CBC News yesterday that politics is in his “blood” and hinted he could stage a return to Parliament Hill in the future.

“I’d like to think that people could understand and respect the fact that what happened that Good Friday was so totally out of character that that’s not who I am,” he said. “Hopefully there’s a lot of good and a lot of strength and some wisdom that I can bring to public discourse and public life that people would say, ‘I’m a human being, I’ve made mistakes. He made a mistake but we respect that he took responsibility for that and he’s moving on.’ ”

Keeping a low profile after pleading guilty to the ring theft, Robinson has made recent public appearances to speak out on gay rights and doctor-assisted suicide.

Robinson, who now works for the BC government employees’ union, said he feels the strongest and healthiest he has in some time.

“Of course I wish it had never happened. I mean it was a nightmare. But, on the other hand, I’m not sure I would have been here today if something hadn’t forced me to confront some of the demons that I had to confront,” he said.

NDP Leader Jack Layton told Sun Media he has met with Robinson in recent months, but had no discussions about his possible return to Ottawa.

“He certainly seemed to leave that door open. Svend is a remarkably successful politician … and I know there would be a huge welcome for him across the country if he were to come back,” he said.

If I were in charge of the BC government employees union, I’d check Robinson for office supplies at the end of each shift.  Or maybe they have a “theft tolerance package” for employees such as him.
