Sitting on the Pity Potty

Please feel free to bleed some compassion today for the endangered political species known as the true blue Tory.

He is sitting on the pity potty right now. Was January 23rd just a few weeks ago? How time flies when you are falling from a cliff.

Many theories are being advanced as to why the Harper boys, who were such smart campaigners are now looking to have the brain power of Britney Spears tooling around in her expensive chariot with her baby on her lap. Hey Britney. Unlike you, that baby is real.

This baby called a new government has some ear aches. The dominant theory is that the people who were advisors to Harper during the campaign have returned to private life. So Harper has gone back to Buckwheat and Bull Manure.

Those in the Conservative caucus who have to explain the recent Harper cabinet decisions to the constituents don’t want to be disloyal to the leader. So instead they appear to be frustrated or insincere. Then you have the blogger wing of the Tories public relations campaign. Sometimes they play the lazy man’s short game. Blame the Mainstream Media, aka the MSM.  If the MSM didn’t focus on the problems, they wouldn’t exist. The hollowest charge of all is that the MSM misses the grits, and wants Paul Martin to be the prime minister.  Here is an example of what shows up in my email inbox from the blogosphere.

Charles,

I would appreciate it if you have the time to peruse my blog http://plattytalk.blogspot.com  and click on the link for a petition started to help show some support for the Conservative party. I have been listening to you for the past few days and you have been giving it to them pretty good, but my view is that we at least let these guys and gals get to the House before we evict them.

Best regards
Dave Platten

Dear Dave,

I am neither your best friend, nor your worst enemy. If you think of me as a loyal reliable Tory, please allow me to liberate you of this misunderstanding.  While there are people in the Commentary business who are diehard Tories or Liberals or New Democrats, I am not one of them. I have voted for different parties at different junctures. Sometimes I simply vote for the person who I think will be the best representative of the riding in which I live.  For the record, I did vote for Stephen Harper on January 23rd. If I had to do it all over again, I would not change my vote.  But my motivation was no different than so many Canadians who don’t feel locked in any one party. I voted for CHANGE.

As far as the rest of the media is concerned, you would be surprised how diverse their voting patterns are. There is a great big urban myth out there that suggests most of my media colleagues are reliable Liberal voters. When media types get together they sure do have a lot of laughs over that one.

Good luck to you and your other Blues Brothers. And please stop taking yourselves too seriously. This is Canada. We love our losers.  And remember things have to get easier in the next couple of weeks as people tune out political skating and tune in the real thing from Turin. If that doesn’t provide enough peroxide for your bruise, know this. Things could always be worse. What if the prime minister’s wife was being accused of being caught up in some gambling ring run by guys who carry violin cases with no violins.
