Good and short read by good business columnist Harvey Enchin at the Vancouver Sun yesterday, in which he finds what readers of this web site found a few years ago. (In fairness, maybe Mr. Enchin found it too, years ago, but has simply been waiting for February 11 2009 to occur before warning us).
Who needs economic growth? We do
By Harvey Enchin,
Vancouver Sun
February 11, 2009The Canadian economy is shrinking and it’s not so bad, is it? Sure, businesses are shutting down, jobs are being lost, government revenue has been slashed, services are being curtailed, consumer spending is falling, investment is dwindling, poverty is growing and people are losing hope for their future and that of their children.
But wouldn’t you agree that it’s much better than it was under a growing economy, which former geneticist David Suzuki cleverly called ecocide? He and others advocate an absence of economic growth as the ideal.
Mr. Enchin examines the theories behind this Suzuki bafflegab and crapspeak, and resolves (with my highlighting of course):
Those policy interventions resemble those of all failed socialist states since the Soviet Union’s first five-year plan under Stalin. Given Victor’s ideal scenario, the direction of economic development would depend completely upon decisions made by government planners on the basis of their evaluation of the country’s needs. It is the very essence of socialism.
