2. Two good reads today, aside from all our columnists: From MacLean’s mag: Andrew Coyne’s “Hallelujah! (UPDATE: Damnation!)” —it’s on the auto bailout. And on the the other damnable fiasco, Andrew Coyne’s “A political fiasco of their own making – This is a new low for Canada, and Harper’s Tories aren’t to blame”. The first one takes 30 seconds. The second one is more brilliant but takes 5 minutes. THIS, is brilliant:
Something in the Canadian political class, some primeval instinct, requires it to beach itself at regular intervals on the shores of some lunatic misadventure. The ingredients are always the same: immense self-absorption; total strategic blindness; a profound disconnect with, if not contempt for, how its machinations will play outside its own narrow circles; and, as the extent of its miscalculation starts to become clear, panicked, bovine unanimity in support of pressing on with the same strategy. Oh, and some sort of special status for Quebec.
And that’s just the opener.

Object of hilarity: Things that you know gotta hurt anybody with a semblance of sanity: The left-wing Toronto Star’s left-wing readers all clamored —nay, they ANGRILY DEMANDED—that the feds cough up billions, upon billions, upon billions, of taxpayer funds for the benefit of their big extremely highly-paid unionized auto-building brethren, in order to save them — as only government can (in the mind of a leftist); and then when the feds do just that:
Clearly they were going for outright nationalization of the auto industry, as per Marx and Lenin, and this is but their latest let down. So it’s Things that you know gotta hurt left-wing mainstream media newspaper reporters and editors and publishers—and leftists generally: Item B, I s’pose.
5. Some of you may have read about ANOTHER giant Wall Street rip-off just uncovered under the name Bernard Madoff, who was a well-known, and politically very well connected financier and “investor” and hedge-fund manager, etc. As someone formerly in the investment industry, I know (of) him well. The Wall Street Journal reports that he made the DEMOCRATIC PARTY his politics of choice, writing, “He has made major donations to Democratic candidates and organizations.” But upon my further investigation, DID HE EVER.
