Private Schools far outrank state-run schools in new rankings

The new ranking are out for British Columbia schools, but I assume the central point would extend to most places in Canada—that is that private schools, as opposed to the state-run public schools—are far and away the leaders in educational quality.

Of the top 10 schools ranked in Cowley’s 2005 report, nine were independent. Seven schools ranked 10 out of 10 based on a number of indicators that ranked academic performance. Only one school in the top 10 was a public school.

Information like the school’s average Grade 12 mark, percentage of provincial exams failed, average number of exams taken per student and high school graduation rate were some of the key indicators in the report.

Of course the “news” article went on to dismiss all the findings by somehow managing to find only those who work in the public state-run system to comment on the study.  Apparently the folks who work in private schools were busy teaching and junk like that.

Studies like this so expose the state-run schools as inferior, and the liberal news media is in love with things “state-run”, like all liberals should.  Moreover, the study was conducted by the Fraser Institute, which the liberal-left loathes because it isn’t dominated by socialists and the folks at the Fraser Institute believe in a free market.  That explains the negative tone of the story I suppose.

But their head-in-the-sand approach notwithstanding, here are the rankings for British Columbia:

1. Crofton House (independent girls school), Vancouver

2. Little Flower Academy (independent girls school), Vancouver

3. St. George’s School (independent boys school), Vancouver

4. York House (independent girls school), Vancouver

5. Southridge senior secondary (independent), Surrey

6. Vancouver College (independent boys school), Vancouver

7. West Point Grey (independent), Vancouver

8. University Hill secondary (public), Vancouver

9. Brentwood College School (independent), Mill Bay

10. St. Michaels University School (independent), Victoria

I didn’t attend any of these schools, but I managed to educate myself on my own after I finished school.

Read the whole report here at the Fraser Institute web site and form your own opinion.
