Pizzeria owner denies Sgro’s libel claims, countersues for $1.25 million

That “free” pizza that Liberal Judy Sgro’s campaign workers were eating is going to end up costing TONS of money!  And guess whose!  Ours! At least partially, as the Liberals have already fronted $10,000 of our tax dollars to her defence fund. 

Somebody needs to keep a list of allegations and legal proceedings and criminal investigations surrounding Liberal Party MPs and officials and their alleged corruption and malfeasance.  I guess this blog site could be a good starting point. 

Pizzeria owner denies Sgro’s libel claims, countersues for $1.25 million

TORONTO (CP) – The now deported pizza-store owner who brought down former immigration minister Judy Sgro with allegations of influence peddling is blaming the Media for any libel against her, and is counter-suing her for $1.25 million.

Documents obtained by The Canadian Press show Harjit Singh, his daughter-in-law, and two friends all deny virtually every aspect of Sgro’s claim against them, including making numerous statements widely reported in the press.

“The defendants state that the accusations of libel and slander . . . were never spoken or published by them,” Singh and the others state.

“In the alternative, the libel was inserted without actual malice or gross negligence by the Media and/or that the said words were not calculated to disparage the plaintiff Sgro.”

The Liberal cabinet minister resigned Jan. 14 after Singh alleged she had promised him he could stay in Canada in return for his help on her election campaign last spring.

He was deported to India earlier this month after a 16-year battle to remain in Canada, saying Sgro orchestrated his arrest in December and subsequent deportation to save her own political skin. Sgro strenuously denied the allegations and a Federal Court judge, in upholding Singh’s removal from Canada, concluded his claims defied common sense.

In a widely reported Media statement, Sgro gave Singh and the others a week to retract publicly their statements. She then launched a $750,000 defamation suit against them late last month. […]
