The Liberals’ crack post-9/11 security measures are in place, and to prove it, deputy Conservative Party leader Peter MacKay hopped over one of the “security measures” (a 3-foot-high bar) to show us.
MacKay was in St. John’s, Nfld. to discuss security issues! When an NTV news crew asked him for a quick interview, he obliged them by hopping over the top-notch security installation (the aforementioned 3-foot-high bar).
This was at one of Canada’s major ports.
But on another tangent, I couldn’t help but notice how in the CTV story about it, even while the crack CTV news team is mocking the government for its lame progress on security, they clearly don’t have the foggiest clue about even where Vancouver’s port is. Here’s how they describe it:
While major ports such as Vancouver’s and Toronto’s are isolated from the downtown core, St. John’s Harbour is unique. Ships tie up in the heart of downtown. Containers from all over the world are stacked mere metres from city sidewalks.
Have you been to Vancouver? Gastown, Chinatown, Stanley Park, much of the west end (which is one of the most populous square miles in all of North America) and most of the business district is absolutely, precisely, exactly, on and surrounding the Port of Vancouver. The World Trade Center and Canada Place Trade and Convention Center is literally on the Port of Vancouver. The Seabus crosses the Port of Vancouver every 15 minutes. It’s dotted with yacht clubs and tour boats. The Lion’s Gate Bridge crosses it. The biggest cruise ship terminal aside from Miami and New York is on the Port of Vancouver, which is downtown. The Port literally defines Vancouver’s downtown.
But I’m sure they’ll get Canada straight someday. And that the liberals will think it’s worth protecting someday.
