Ontario Liberal Government: Sponsorship’s mini-me

imageDoes anybody in Ontario have a job that doesn’t depend, either partially or completely, on government handouts—or one which isn’t government-related?

The Liberals are succeeding in getting all manner of people and institutions into their lair—all are becoming hooked and reliant to one degree or another on the big nanny-state liberal-left government.

Thus as we can see, the liberal-left mission is working quite nicely, a few nuisances like the Gomery Inquiry and Guramant Grewal exposing Liberals notwithstanding.

I find it particularly galling that public-sector unions would donate cash to a political party.  Doesn’t anyone see a problem with this?

Money follows power at Queen’s Park, as Premier Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals are discovering to their benefit.

The governing Liberals led the pack in political donations, bringing in $6.8 million last year, according to Elections Ontario filings released yesterday.

By comparison the NDP raised $4.31 million and the Progressive Conservatives brought in $4.28 million.

Groups as disparate as Imperial Tobacco, DaimlerChrysler, the Toronto Police Association and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation flocked to the Liberals, armed with cheques of up to the maximum of $8,400 apiece.

Even auto-parts giant Magna International, with its close ties to the former Conservative governments of premiers Mike Harris and Ernie Eves, gave $7,982 to the Liberals.

That was more than three times the $2,470 Magna gave to the Tories over the same period.

The Toronto Police Association, another group with a history of warm relations with Conservative administrations, gave $4,250 to the Liberals. They forked over $938 to the Tories.

Imperial Tobacco, which is lobbying through third-party organizations against the proposed province-wide ban on smoking in public places, gave the Liberals $6,500 and nothing to the Tories or the NDP.

Hill & Knowlton, the international public relations firm that was once a sinecure for former Harris Conservative acolytes, gave the Liberals $8,400 and gave the Tories just $147.

The Ontario Medical Association and Windsor Casino Ltd. contributed to the Liberals, $8,000 and $3,000 respectively. Earlier this year, the Liberals signed a four-year deal with the OMA giving doctors an extra $1 billion and also announced a $400 million facelift for the Windsor casino and an adjacent convention centre.

Meanwhile, the Tories managed to reduce their debt from $9.8 million to $7.6 million.

The filings revealed that NDP Leader Howard Hampton donated $3,802 to his party, while McGuinty gave his Liberals $1,200 and Conservative Leader John Tory gave his party $2,098.
