Newspaper editor: “No—too handsome. Make ‘im uglier.”

It’s a Weekend Blog Entry, so you know it’s not too serious unless it has to be.

Ever notice how newspapers and TV news always manage to use the most absurd—usually the ugliest or simply the weirdest—photos of people in politics that they can find to accompany their stories?  Obviously they do it on purpose.  I think they try their hardest to get the most absurd pictures of conservatives though, and use the slickest model-poses they can find of their heroes, the liberal-lefties.

They make one of the least attractive humans, Yasser Arafat, look positively handsome and cool on Time Magazine, and they make Ann Coulter, one of the more attractive humans, look like she’s an illegal alien from Mars and is 12-inches across and has a couple of honkin’ white 189-inch twigs popping out of her midsection and a-comin’ right atcha.

Ann Coulter Yasser

I pointed this out some time ago during the John Roberts Supreme Court nomination grilling.  Roberts, conservative, was just too handsome.

John Roberts - too handsome!

They needed to do something about that for their stories.  So this was the best that their photomographic thigamajiggies could pump out, and which they chose to use for their stories:

John Roberts - better!

I imagine soon we’ll be seeing pictures of Osama bin Laden lookin’ good, up against George Bush after a 13-mile run in the rain:

Osama lookin' yummy

But do you imagine we’ll ever see this picture of Prime Minister Paul Martin in the newspapers and as a backdrop for TV news reports about Paul Martin?  It would tend to go against their massive media effort to portray Conservative leader Stephen Harper as “scary”.
