The red-Green liberal Elizabeth May blames her Nazi comment on media (they reported it.)

You made what I said sound like I actually said it!  Damn the media!

May blames brouhaha on headline writers

By SEAN HOLMAN, 24 HOURS

At issue: last month, May compared Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s position on climate change to “a grievance worse than Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement of the Nazis.”

That comparison soon became a source of controversy, with a spokesman for the prime minister calling it an “extremist and undignified statement.”

May subsequently said she was “dismayed that members of the Harper government have chosen to distort my comments to create a firestorm of controversy designed to distract attention from their failure to live up to Canada’s Kyoto commitments” – noting that a similar comparison had been made by best-selling author George Monbiot.

But, in a posting on a Green discussion group last Friday, May expanded on that opinion, writing, “The Canadian Jewish Congress told me Holocaust survivors had been disturbed. No idea if this is true, but if they were it was by Harper and sensationalist headline writers. I think part of the problem is that “Chamberlain” is too long for headline writers and “Nazi” [being shorter] works well … What an outrageous bit of irresponsibility from media and bullying from Harper.

May – who earlier also expressed deep “regret that the inflamed rhetoric around this issue has caused pain or offence,” assuring “the Canadian Jewish Congress and all Canadians that I did not compare Nazi Germany and the Holocaust to any current issue” – was not available for comment yesterday.

You may have noticed she also seems to doubt the integrity of the Canadian Jewish Congress with this quip: “The Canadian Jewish Congress told me Holocaust survivors had been disturbed. No idea if this is true…

Why say that if she didn’t doubt it?

But I know.  My fault for bringing it up.
