Liberals reportedly say: “put our party out of its misery”

On the final Mike Duffy Countdown show on CTV Newsnet, columnist Don Martin just reported that he’s heard that Liberals can’t get rid of Paul Martin fast enough—so much so that they almost relish the election loss on Monday so that they can finally get rid of him and find a new leader.

Here’s my transcript of what he just said:

I don’t know if he’ll see the inside of Stornaway [the Opposition Leader’s official residence] …. there’s a HUGE desire in the Liberal Party…. some of the Liberals I’ve heard are actually RELIEVED that the polls are where they’re at because this means the party will be put out of its misery under Paul Martin and they can start looking TOMORROW for a new leader.

Julie Van Dusen was not brought up as a possible candidate for the job.

Sidebar:  I congratulate Mike Duffy on a superbly done show.  I think it was the best election coverage I’ve seen in this country in my lifetime.  Overall, he maintained a good balance and perspective.  Very un-CBC state-run-media-like.  This is good.

Guest selection was excellent.  And his handling of them was perfect.  Especially his handling of the weasels like the Liberals’ John Duffy.  He is clearly familiar with almost everyone who is anyone in politics, and not just on a cursory level but on a friendly basis.

I wasn’t easy on him at first, but he came around and was firm when he needed to be, he sat back and let things fly when interrupting would have ruined it, and he stopped people only after letting them finish their points.  I could not have done better and I don’t know anyone who could have.

I’d have a cocktail with Mike Duffy anytime.
