Liberals blow

‘We should not have believed the local MP’

— P.E.I. Environment Minister Jamie Ballem, speaking about a Liberal MP

Another empty Liberal largesse vote-buying promise exposed in PEI.

No paperwork for cable in Ottawa

The federal Conservatives are having a hard time finding any of the paperwork associated with funding for a new power cable that would transfer wind energy from P.E.I. to the mainland.

The previous Liberal government announced before the last election that Ottawa would commit $30 million to the project. But the new Stephen Harper government says it won’t necessarily fulfill promises made by the Liberals.

On Monday P.E.I. Environment Minister Jamie Ballem met in Ottawa with the federal Environment Minister Rona Ambrose to find out if the Conservatives would honour the Liberal commitment. Ballem says the response from Ambrose was discouraging.

“They did some checking to try to find the official documentation for this. There was no preliminary treasury board report, or no submission to treasury board, no official documentation,” Ballem reported to the legislature on Tuesday. […]

But furthermore, I wonder if the fabulous Ms. Ambrose asked the Environment Minister (oh God—that’s half the problem right there) from PEI what my first question would have been:  Why in tarnation would PEI need to transfer wind power generated in PEI to the mainland?  Is wind power now fulfilling all of PEI’s power needs?

It took 21 seconds to find an answer in another article at the state-run CBC.ca people’s web site (making me wonder why the intrepid state-employed CBC “reporter” didn’t ask the question, then having realized I was dealing with the state-run CBC here, the wonderment ceased):

There are already eight wind generators at the PEI Energy Corp. site. They’re expected to supply two per cent of the province’s needs. PEI Energy Corp. is a Crown corporation and the province is pushing wind power because it’s a clean, renewable source.

Provincial Environment Minister Jamie Ballem said if Maritime Electric opens its own operation, P.E.I. will exceed its goal of getting 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2010.

So naturally the Liberals want to transfer power out of PEI so that the dream is never fulfilled, thereby justifying the requirement for more federal and provincial funds, in order to continue this cycle of stupidity.

My answer to the minister would therefore be, no, sorry, this is utterly stupid, please leave so I can continue my work for the taxpayers.  Which helps explains why I’m not a cabinet minister and Rona Ambrose is.
