I’d been wondering where my province’s premier stood on this, and I guessed right: LIBERAL.
British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell called the court ruling balanced.
“The Supreme Court has let the federal government know what their responsibilities are. And I think it’s also respected the religious beliefs of others,” he said.
Liberals are going to try, as they did in the US after their failed election effort, to transform this into a “Normal Liberal People” (who support gay marriage) versus “Zany Religious Right-Wing People” (who don’t)—thing.
There’s no room for people who are simply in favor of keeping the marriage institution as a natural, and special, man-woman life-creating traditional union afforded special status because of the sacrifices they make in creating and building familes and the dumb old nation.
And yet it seems to me gays are as fond of that whole special sacred marriage institution as the rest of us are—I mean look how they’re fighting for it so they can be just like us. Are they telling us that gays are actually right-wing religious zanies?
