According to an old article I dug up in The Alberta Report, Chief Justice Lamer granted an audience to the Ottawa Citizen in 1998 to declare:
“Thank God for the charter.” He admitted that the charter has given the court an enormous power, but then shrugged, “That’s [parliament’s] doing, not ours. [It] might be, well, that the elected [representatives] really didn’t know what they were doing.”
This is why we should be guarded about just whom, exactly, we hold in high esteem. And this is why we shouldn’t vote for liberals who appoint liberals to high places.
