Just back from “Smokey” Smith’s funeral in Vancouver

…And what a beautiful funeral it was.

I made a series of pictures you can all look at HERE, with commentary of course (even managed to bring the state-run CBC up—you know me!).  Note:  Click “Previous” when you start looking at them, instead of “next”, if you want to see them in order.

It was at St. Andrew’s-Wesley Church downtown, and there was a two-kilometer funeral procession to the church starting at the other end of the Burrard Bridge (so for those who don’t know—it was a spectacularly beautiful scenic walk).

Jets flew overhead and the street was lined with thousands.  Bands played, and, well, I couldn’t describe it.

I can’t begin to tell you the pride I felt.

Among the highlights was the speech by BC Lieutenant-Governor Iona Campagnolo—fitting for her Italian-ness, and some beautiful singing by a woman whose name escaped me, but after hearing her,  I have already decided I’m going try to track down just to send her a thank you note—it was spectacularly beautiful.  There were speakers outside the church so those in the street could hear.  Was amazing

People were all so respectful and proud.  They all clapped when the need arose.  They bowed their heads during the beautiful prayers.  A moment of awakening of sorts occurred for me and many around me as the Lord’s Prayer was being read, and we all—I mean ALL of us standing on the street—started saying it along with the padre.  As we all started realizing how we were all saying it, heads rose a little, then a little more, and we all started saying it louder and louder as we all realized we were all saying it!  Again with the “amazing”!  Fantastic!

Please look at the pictures I took.  It was a great day.
