Subject: economy up – surprised economists; economy down – surprised economists
Dear Joel:
I got a kick out of this headline. “GDP down 0.1 per cent in Q1: first decline in five years surprises economists”. Which economists I wonder. Certainly not the ones that have been continually “surprised” by good market news, or the ones that have been promoting impending disaster for the last 6 months.
Regards
Ward

HA! Excellent point!
It’s sort of like when a pro-conservative-values movie like the recent Bella opened and was described as a “surprise hit” in most of the media. Surprise to whom? I totally expected it to be a hit! Juno was also a “surprise hit”. The Passion of the Christ was a “super shocking surprise puzzling weirdo psycho-Christo hit!”, and all those massively successful family-friendly movies with positive messages were equally “shockingly successful” (to them) … But those anti-war and anti-Bush movies suffered “surprising losses in theaters…”
After talking down the economy for the past year and three months in Canada and past 7 years and four months in the U.S., I’m only shocked that they can pretend to be “surprised” at the recent downturns.
Damn they make me laugh!
Thanks
Joel
