The U.N./Iraq Oil-For-Palaces ‘n WMD program is, as I’ve said before, a stinky onion that needs to be peeled. Of course, if I had a stinky onion that was going bad, I’d throw it in the garbage and buy another one.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) – Secretary General Kofi Annan has suspended the head of the UN oil-for-food program in Iraq and a senior official who dealt with contracts following an independent investigation that accused them of misconduct, a spokesman said Monday.
Benon Sevan, who was in charge of the $64 billion US humanitarian program, and Joseph Stephanides, who heads the UN Security Council Affairs Division, were told Friday that they had been suspended with pay, spokesman Fred Eckhard said.
Sevan and Stephanides were told they would receive a letter this week “laying out the charges against them,” which will allow them to defend themselves before UN disciplinary bodies in what will likely be a long appeals process, he said.
“Suspension is the beginning of a disciplinary process,” Eckhard said.
An interim report released Thursday of an investigation led by former U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker accused Sevan of a “grave conflict of interest,” saying his conduct in soliciting oil deals was “ethically improper and seriously undermined the integrity of the United Nations.”
