Good Cinnamon Stillwell interview

Read an extended interview with member of our columnist team Cinnamon Stillwell at News Blog Central.  Here’s just one of the Q and As, but read the whole thing—it’s very enlightening and I think the vast majority of Canadians could really relate to Cinnamon Stillwell.  I know I can.

James Bostwick: How did your friends (presumably liberal) deal with your transformation? Did they ostracize you, did they demonstrate any of that “tolerance” they speak so highly of, did any “convert” to Conservatism along with you, as you questioned audibly the Bay Area status quo?

Cinnamon Stillwell: None of my friends converted to conservatism along with me, although one of them was already there and I never really realized it. After my political transformation, we were able to relate on a level that we hadn’t before. As for my liberal friends, I’m happy to say that we’re all still friends, although we’ve certainly drifted apart. This hasn’t been due entirely to the politics, but I think that helped it along.

My best friend and I almost fell out twice over politics, but both times we agreed to live and let live. Mostly we do that by just not talking politics and I don’t send my columns her way. Although avoiding the subject of politics bothered me at first, I began to look at it as a nice break from it all. But I do think it’s contributed to the erosion of our friendship over the years.

The relationship in my life where political differences might seem to be the most crucial has actually been the most successful. My husband’s politics are far to the left of mine and my political transformation wasn’t easy on our marriage. But we managed to work things out and have found that love can conquer politics. He’s very supportive of my career and believe it or not, there are quite a few issues we agree on. For instance, we both abhor (today’s) liberals, he from the left and me from the right.
