Globe and Mail crops photo of terrorist to mask automatic machine gun? Maybe just saving space!

Trifling observance du jour:

BUT FIRST, an UPDATE!  I’ve received emails from folks informing me that the woman in question is not holding a tomato and a garlic, but rather, she is holding an explosive.  Yes, people, I’m more than well aware that she is not holding a tomato and a garlic, but rather, is holding an explosive.  I even said so, to wit, “(Yes I do know better.)”.  check!  But thanks!  And now on to our regularly scheduled program…

The Globe and Mail covered the story of the discovery of the identity of one of the Russian homicide bombers this morning with a odd choice in photojournalism.

Nearly all media are going with the same photo clearly showing the irreverent terrorists posing with well-placed weapons:

The Drudge Report, CTV.ca, National Post, New York Times, Cnews.canoe.ca… all carry this photo.  As you can see, the Islamists are carrying well-recognized weapons in their well-staged “jihad glamor” shot.  Fox News has a slightly different one of her holding what is clearly an automatic handgun-type weapon.

But here’s the cropped photo the Globe and Mail decided to use.  It looks like the Islamist homicide bomber is holding up a tomato and a garlic.  Maybe getting ready for supper for the young couple!  (Yes I do know better.)  And what’s he holding?  Who knows?  A book?  A ladle for the spaghetti sauce?  It’s well cropped out.  We can’t see.

Yes it’s clearly cropped, avoiding the display of what is actually a fearsome weapon.  In fact here’s the same photo —the whole photo (or at least another version of the exact photo that isn’t as cropped) showing what is obviously an automatic machine gun, from Yahoo News.

So it’s an odd editorial choice.  Why did they do the extra work to crop it, or use that cropped photo, of all the photos of the terrorists clearly holding deadly weapons, instead of what looks like a green tomato and a garlic as if she’s about to make a pizza or a nice bowl of spaghetti for sup-sup?

• For their part, the left-wing CBC.ca:  No picture; and the story is a well buried amongst other CBC garbage in a Canadian Press story.
• And the left-wing Toronto Star: No picture.  No up-to-date story on this suspect at all, in fact.

Pictures speak a thousand words.
