Different ways of saying “massive corruption” and “massive coverup”

Here’s one way:

“Liberals hid costs of gun registry, Fraser says”

Interesting because “coverup” and “corruption” would have fit into that CTV.ca headline.  Yet they went with “hid costs”.

CTV.ca News Staff

The former Liberal government went to great lengths to hide the true costs of the controversial gun registry, Auditor General Sheila Fraser said in a scathing report released Tuesday.

Though the decade-long expense of the controversial registry through the end of fiscal 2005 has been tallied at $946 million—coming in below an earlier approximation of $1 billion—government officials concealed the actual amount, Fraser said in her first report since the minority Conservatives came to power earlier this year.

“It is more than simply a disagreement between accountants,” Fraser told a news conference, in reference to the 2004 decision that hid nearly $22 million in overspending by the Canadian Firearms Centre that year alone.

“We believe that decision did not respect the government’s own policies nor the Financial Administration Act. So this is a serious matter.”

[…] The report finds that nobody kept written records of key meetings.

Fraser also noted that government officials refused to give up their client-solicitor privilege on conversations over the legality of the accounting decisions, denying the auditor general from access to key information.

I’ll find other ways, as I head over to the state-run CBC.ca web site now.  I note that on the state-run CBC Newsworld channel, in the last hour, they focused not on this damning report against Liberal corruption and ineptitude, but on a Conservative accountability commission appointee who was rejected (for no good reason) by the left, in a purely unaccountably stupid partisan move.

Wait.  The state-run media hasn’t got anything on their web site about this.  It’s 12:13 now.  Just news on the Conservative appointee being shunned by political geniuses on the left.

So while we wait, here’s how Canadian Press does it through Yahoo.ca news:

Audit says government cooked books to hide gun registry costs from Parliament

Interesting.  “Cooked books” sounds almost fun!

Here’s how the leftist Liberal Party-supporting Toronto Star headlines it:

Auditor: Gun registry ran up ‘significant costs’

That’s fun!  No corruption or coverup in that headline. Just “significant costs”.  And they have a sub-headline which instantly excuses the Liberals on their behalf:  “Liberal government in the midst of regime change at the time”.  Ah so they’re “exonerated”!  By the leftists!  Good reportin’!

Amazingly, the Globe and Mail, which is owned by Bell Globemedia, has the almost exactly the same headline as Yahoo.ca’s Canadian Press story:

Liberals cooked books on gun registry: auditor

Now we’re cookin’ with gas!  Lots of gas!  From the nether regions of Liberals!  Pee yoo!  They even have a lighthearted bit of fun with the thing.  Here’s their first sentence in their report:  “Federal officials engaged in a frantic search for legal loopholes to jiggle the books in 2004…”  They “jiggled” the books!  No coverup, just a “jiggle”!

The National Post plays on words:

Death knell for gun registry?

Still nothing (at 12:36 PM PDT) at the state-run people’s multi-gazillion-dollar CBC.ca web site, although they have updated it with the story about the video of terrorist plane ramming into the Pentagon in 2001 being released, which never once mentions the word “terrorist”.  They’re like magicians over there at the state-run media.

Still nothing at 12:50 PM PDT but they added a story about Richard Hatch, of the reality show Survivor, who is in trouble.  It’s their third most important story.  (1) The Pentagon video (2) the Caledonia story (3) The Richard Hatch story.  No liberals in trouble.  Page saved for posterity.

On the state-run people’s official news channel CBC NewsWorld, meanwhile, they are parading pro-gun-registry folks and lecturing us knuckleheads about how to do things liberal.  One woman actually declared that aside from a problem with some accounting, the A-G found nothing wrong, really.

Finally, at after 1:00 PM PDT, well over an hour after I scooped the story from surfing the Internet, the multi-gazzillion-dollar state-run people’s web site, the CBC.ca, embarks on an effort to present the news, bumping the Richard Hatch caper right off the page, as far as I can see.  Their headline:

Liberals misinformed parliament about millions spent on gun registry: AG

Wait for the CBC to start putting quote marks around the words “Liberals misinformed parliament”, just as they do when they say the “so-called” “war on terrorism”.

And they end their story on a cautionary note for Conservative Party election planners:

Many Tories believe they have the public’s blessing to dismantle it, but support for the registry runs high in Quebec and the country’s biggest cities, areas where the Conservatives need to build support.
