Death of stupid long gun registry reported to be on target

Excuse me while I go off on a tangent while bringing you this news (hat tip to Exile for alerting me to the article)

I’m a stickler for editorial details in the mainstream media even though I miss ‘em myself.  But these people are professionals and have editors!  So quite apart from this good news they’re reporting here about the demise of the long gun registry, note how poorly written this article is (I indicated errors with the [SIC] indicator and other notes in square brackets).

EXCLUSIVE: Tories to disarm gun registry

Global National
Published: Thursday, May 04, 2006

OTTAWA—The Tories campiagned [SIC] on law and order and the Conservative Party was not just talking tough.
A Global National exclusive has discoverd [SIC] the Harper government is appealing to it’s [SIC] base by moving to disarm the controversial gun registry.

Global National has learned the details of how the Conservatives are going to deal with the gun registry during the election they promised to kill it, but that’s proving to be more difficult than they thought.

It was a promise that always played well with conservative audiences.

Since they took power the Conservatives have been trying to figure out how to kill the long gun registry and they’re now promising they’re going to act.

Global National has learned what they are planning to do.  [YES, OK, WE GET THAT Y’ALL HAVE LEARNED HOW THEY’RE GOING TO DO IT!]

Sources say the federal government will announce a one year amnesty for gun owners who fail to register a firearm, or if they let their license expire.

The government will waive the payment of any fees and it will refund the fees paid by gun owners in recent months.

Until the registry is eliminated, responsibility for it will move from the public safety minister, to the RCMP.

The head of the national firearms association says he will welcome this action, but [SPACING ERROR] it doesn’t go far enough.

The Tories do want to get rid of the gun registry,.but [PUNCTUATION AND SPACING ERROR] that will require legislation they are planning to introduce a bill, but there’s no guarantee it will pass in a minority parliament. [THAT WHOLE SENTENCE IS A MESS]

The auditor general may give them some important ammunition.

Sheila Fraser will be issuing a report in 12 days [SIC] time and Global National has also learned it will be critical of the way the firearms centre has handed out and administered contracts in the past.

It was the death of 14 women in Montreal that sparked an outcry for tougher gun controls, and the gun registry was created in 1995.

Those that fought hard for the registry say it should not be abandoned.

But the Conservatives are listening to Canada’s gun owners, who have been screaming for years they are law abiding citizens who should not be forced to register their firearms.

Adding to the gun registry’s public relations—huge cost overruns and originally promised to cost taxpayers 2 million dollars the bill is now more than a billion.. [PUNCTUATION AND MALFORMED SENTENCE]

Although supporters of the registry point out that now it’s running more efficiently, costing about 16 million dollars a year. [MALFORMED SENTENCE]

Coincidentally, the National Post’s editorial this morning is about the things they think the Conservatives could do to kill the long gun registry.  (And it has no mistakes!)

[…] To start with, the Conservative Cabinet could issue an amnesty for gun owners—some 70,000 by June—who have received these demand letters. And it could order the CFC to stop sending special enforcement bulletins to police, at least until the status of the act is clear.

The Conservatives could also order federal Crown prosecutors to stop flying expert witnesses from Ottawa to attend special court cases around the country in which the CFC is seeking to confiscate short-barrelled handguns from collectors who bought them legally before the registry law took effect. So far this year, this has cost taxpayers $8-million.

Using a Cabinet order, the previous government banned the transport of nearly all legal handguns from owners’ homes to firing ranges. The Conservatives could use a Cabinet order to lift this prohibition.  […]

I suspect the Auditor-General’s report on the registry later this month will provide the launching pad needed to get this ridiculous long gun registry off our backs.

And just one more error I found—this one from the Vancouver Sun online.  Their punctuation is totally wrong.  They’re saying that crime is the focus of the controversial legislation of one Tory.  The proper spelling and punctuation is “ Tories’ ”.
