I always accuse liberals of living by a “culture of death”. Even wrote a column about it recently and coincidentally called it “Liberals’ Culture of Death”.
But Brian Daly of Canadian Press says this Gomery testimony speaks to a “culture of corruption”.
That works too!
Phantom jobs and wads of cash dropped off in unmarked envelopes were part of a culture of corruption that reached high up in the governing Liberal party, according to testimony at the Gomery inquiry.
Paper trails were obscured, billings were altered to bamboozle watchdogs and those reluctant to comply were strong-armed into co-operation, advertising executive Jean Brault said.
Brault said the alleged scams ultimately funnelled more than $1 million in secret payments into the party’s Quebec wing in exchange for sponsorship contracts aimed at promoting national unity.
Brault’s testimony – finally made public after a week of frenzied speculation – poses a serious danger to Prime Minister Paul Martin’s minority Liberal government.
His testimony, at times delivered through anguished tears, at other times recounded matter of factly, had been kept under wraps by a publication ban that was finally lifted Thursday.
[…] He painted a grimy portrait that seemed plucked from annals of banana republics. […]
