Food, shelter, clothing — we’ve all heard of these things being the essential facets of life, none of which are provided in Canada by the state (thank God), on account of the fact that Canada isn’t a communist or socialist country like North Korea. But state-provided hockey and stupid “comedies” and “news” and the “analysis” of news and off-balance political opinions? Yup. That’s a vital, core function of government. Well at least it is in Iran, Cuba, North Korea, and Canada.
In today’s weird story of the day, though, according to a brief pseudo-story in the Financial Post, this morning, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty seemed to muse about the state not having to be in the business of mortgage insurance. I wholeheartedly agree. The state has no business being in the business of… any business whatsoever, in actual fact.
“Over time, I don’t think it’s essential that a government financial institution provide mortgage insurance in Canada. I think what’s key is that mortgage insurance is available at a reasonable cost in Canada. I think there is a role to regulate but whether we, the Canadian people, have to be the owners and shareholders of a financial institution to do this is a question. I don’t think it’s essential in the long run.”
Or the short run.
Since he’s on about the core functions of government, how on Earth does Canada’s finance minister reconcile CMHC not being a necessary thing for government to be involved in, and yet the state-owned media — the dreadful left-wing CBC — is “essential?”
Bizarre logic. Actually it’s not logical at all. The state should be in neither business. Especially the latter, since there are other implications and considerations at stake besides simply the core functions of government and it being in competition with the nation’s own citizens, meddling in the free marketplace, engineering a false economy, and screwing the housing market up, which is what is in fact happening. In the case of the state-owned media, I mean things like shaping voting patterns, state control over thoughts and ideas, state-engineered culture-shaping, national identity, and so much more.
Flaherty added this, which will be the headline for left-wing and far-left and socialists and progressive zealots the land over, this morning and into the next week or two:
“We have a list of Crowns, Crown agencies that are being reviewed.”
One can only hope they’re taking a hard look at state-owned, state-funded media, with a view to entirely getting out of that business.
State-owned media should be banned in this country, and that notion enshrined in our constitution. What kind of government competes against its own citizens? Especially in the forum of ideas and moreover, the nation’s politics?
