Chavez: Prescient genius? Or wingnut?

Hugo Cavez. He's 'progressive'!From our Socialists Is Good Fer Wot Ales Ya file, we take a peek at Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Let us start with some background.  The BBC’s web site writes:

Like his friend Fidel Castro, our analyst [Simon Watts] adds, Mr Chavez thrives on conflict and finds it politically useful to portray himself as a victim of US aggression.

Well so far that just sounds like another Canadian liberal-lefty.  Paul Martin.  Jean Chretien.  Jack Layton.  Carolyn Parrish.  The CBC. Toronto Star.  Globe and Mail.  Or the “victim of U.S. aggression” Saddam Hussein.  Or Michael Moore.  So what’s new?

US planning invasion, says Chavez

Well there’s something different.  I always expect a liberal-lefty in Canada to say something like that (actully some emails to me say exactly that), but they never quite get there, in public, officially.  They will!

Let’s go on with the story:

Venezuela’s President, Hugo Chavez, says he is in possession of intelligence showing that the United States plans to invade his country.

In a BBC interview, Mr Chavez said the US was after his nation’s oil, much as it had been after Iraq’s.

But he stressed that any invasion would never be allowed to happen.

Mr Chavez has long accused Washington of being behind what he describes as a coup – claims the United States denies.

An attempt to unseat him three years ago was aborted.

The Venezuelan president was interviewed by the BBC’s Robin Lustig in Paris, while on an official visit to France.

Asked why he thought the US was trying to invade Venezuela, Mr Chavez said: “We have denounced intentions.

“A coup happened in Venezuela that was prepared by the US. What do they want? Our oil, as they did in Iraq.

“We have detected with intelligence reports plans of a supposed invasion, one that would never happen. But we have to denounce it,” Mr Chavez said.

OK.  Canada must be next.  Good thing we have our crack military defence squad in top form.

In other news:

The Venezuelan government has warned it will confiscate hundreds of private companies that are lying idle if they fail to re-open.

President Hugo Chavez said the firms’ workers would be given help to set up co-operatives and re-start production for the benefit of the community.

He said the move was needed to fight poverty and end Venezuela’s dependence on “the perverse model of capitalism”.

Sounds like any NDPer or the teachers’ union.  Or the CBC.

And this:

Earlier on Sunday, Venezuela’s most senior Roman Catholic Cardinal, Rosalio Castillo, accused the president of acquiring dictatorial powers.

But in his broadcast, Mr Chavez again insisted that Venezuelans have a clear choice.

“Either capitalism, which is the road to hell, or socialism, for those who want to build the kingdom of God here on Earth,” he said.

Well then.  Now we understand the socialist mind better.

Vote liberal.
