Canadian-speak—from the roots

I got this note in my email today from a regular reader and commenter.

I approached my computer several times yesterday to comment on Prime Minister Harpers visit to Afghanistan. Each time I was left unable to properly put into words my feelings of pride.

We as Canadians have been bombarded with so called Canadian values, but in Afghanistan we see ordinary Canadians doing extraordinary things for Canada and the world. Real Canadian values.

Last year my brother and I decided to take our grandfathers WW-I kit and make a permanent display as a tribute to him and countless others who served and sacrificed for their country. Lance Corporal Richardson, Lewis gunner, of the 42 Highlanders, Black Watch entered the trenches in the Somme until he was wounded at Vimy Ridge.

As boys and young men he instilled in us the importance of service, kindness, and above all honour lest we disrespect those who sacrificed so much for us. He wasn’t a hero, but an ordinary Canadian, who lived a good life until his death at 93 in 1985.

I am fortunate to have these artifacts, his kilt, and letters, because it is a constant reminder of why I’m proud to be a Canadian.

Sincerely,
Wellandboy

Won’t Layton and the ridiculous liberal-leftists be surprised at this overt and rather public display of pride in our Canadians—our fighting forces—and what they do for us—for Canada.
