Canada’s tsunami aid `amateur,’ CARE says

CARE Canada spokesman lambastes the Liberals’ Canada.  And the response from the Liberals?  Watson’s comments are “surprising and disappointing,” said Andrew Graham, spokesman for International Co-operation Minister Aileen Carroll.

I take no pleasure in criticizing my country’s handling of world affairs and its ability or lack thereof to do so; and how it engages (or doesn’t) in saving lives abroad. But if liberals are so “disappointed” with expert opinions like John Watson’s, maybe they should wake up and smell the coffee and listen to conservatives like me who have been harping on this for years, and then maybe they’ll be getting worldwide praise instead of silence or criticisms. 

The story is printed in a left-wing newspaper, the Toronto Star.  Does that make it any easier for you?  I hope to God that it does.

OTTAWA—Canada’s “amateur” response to the tsunami in Southeast Asia highlighted “major problems” with the country’s aid-delivery mechanisms, says the head of one of Canada’s biggest aid agencies.

A. John Watson, the president and chief executive of CARE Canada, blasted public servants, politicians, the military’s disaster response team, the media and other non-governmental organizations — saying all were at fault for the current state of affairs, and that “Canadians expect better of us.”

Watson was especially critical of the government’s decision to deploy the Disaster Assistance Response Team.

“DART makes no sense, except as a PR exercise,” he said, adding he would “throw up” if one more person said DART is fast-moving and was deployed because it could respond faster than an NGO — an assertion he disputes. […]
