(Canada) - Magic Number of Dead People before Liberals Sober-Up: 70,000

Canada waited months—years really—and until over 70,000 people in Sudan were dead and hundreds of thousands—perhaps as many as 1.5 million—were displaced before committing to…. practically nothing.  But today Liberal Prime Minister Martin sure talks like a toughy!  Damn the UN! Never mind the other nations of the world!  We’ll go it alone!

Why he almost sounds like a red-neck conservative!  Did he get “born again”?  Is he one ‘o them friggin evil “evangelicals” now?

Martin will never get that Texas swagger down, nor the actual “military” strength to back up the toughtalk, nor even the true conviction of his words, but at least Martin has the media on his side.  Next up:  a university professor verifying the wisdom of Martin’s toughtalk remarks and official validation of his new foreign policy to go it alone, unilaterally, without waiting for the too-slow UN to act.  Following that, CBC endorsement of “UN too slow!  Ineffective!” mantra, then all other media in Canada follows suit.

Canada must train peacekeepers in Darfur, send equipment: Martin

Nov 13 2004

PENTICTON, B.C. (CP) – Canada will move ahead on a plan to outfit and train peacekeepers in Sudan’s Darfur region and other countries in need, Prime Minister Paul Martin said Saturday, slapping the United Nations for not working fast enough to stop genocide in the area.

Canada has pledged $20 million to support the Sudanese region which has been soaked with blood from a violent civil war.

Martin urged other nations to step up with Canada and provide aid.

On Saturday, the prime minister said he’s not waiting for other nations and suggested Canada could provide more money to meet the needs of an African peacekeeping force being currently being raised.

…and as if they read my mind, the big headline in the Sudan Tribune reads:  “Canada must train peacekeepers in Darfur, send equipment: premier Minister”.  I kid you not.

The “premier Minister” of Canada will not be pleased.
