Bono says Bush increased aid to Africa. So it’s official then.

Phew!—I was hoping some world authority and expert on all things “world”—would come forth and verify that conservative Republican President George W. Bush has in fact tripled aid to Africa and written off the debts of most African countries.  Never mind that the President has been saying it. And the Vice President.  And every presidential spokesman. And every member of the Grand Old Party.  The kids don’t listen to them!  They’re old!

Finally experts Bono and Bob Geldof (who are old, but know how to party) have stepped up and confirmed it.  Now if Madonna (who’s also old but she does “Kabbalah”) could just lend her credibility to it—and that new journalist working for the San Francisco Chronicle, Sean Penn (old, hates conservatives, and insane)…

W’s best Prez for Africa aid – Geldof

Live 8 concert organizer Bob Geldof said President Bush has done more for Africa than any other American leader – even though the continent’s daunting problems have only worsened during his tenure in office.

“He has actually done more than any American President for Africa,” Geldof told Time magazine for its upcoming issue. “It’s empirically so.”

Geldof and U2 frontman Bono are spearheading the worldwide string of concerts on July 2 to train the eyes of the world on African poverty ahead of the coming G8 summit of wealthy nations.

The two activists said they’re hoping to appeal to world leaders’ sense of legacy to achieve a breakthrough on issues of debt forgiveness and aid.

“The most important and toughest nut is President Bush,” Bono told the magazine. “He feels he’s already doubled and tripled aid to Africa, which he has. But he started from far too low a place.”

“I have a hunch that he will step forward with something,” the Irish rocker added. “And it’ll take somebody like him.”

Bush has boosted aid to Africa, established a multibillion-dollar fund to battle AIDS and agreed to write off most of the debt owed by the poorest nations. […]
