Big west coast riding: Liberal Party disarray

The Liberal candidate’s campaign manager just up and quit, yesterday, leaving the big ugly pirate ship S.S. Liberal without a rudder.  So everything’s normal in Liberalville.

“You have a big Liberal machine…and you see them working against you,” the campaign manager said. “You see this is a sinking ship and I just didn’t want to be part of it anymore.”

So he dove overboard.

Here.  Grab onto this line.  What do you mean you can’t swim?  What do you mean you’re waiting for the Coast Guard?  Are you crazy?  Coast Guard?  On the west coast?  You’re a funny floaty!  Now grab onto this line, my Canadian friend.

Patricia Whittaker, LiberalI’m sure Patricia Whittaker, the Liberal candidate in a major west coast riding—the huge urban/suburban riding of Delta-Richmond East—is a perfectly lovely person, but the problems that the Grits are facing in that riding today is emblematic of the Liberal Party in many ridings across Canada today.

In that riding’s case, Paul Martin visited the riding and never even bothered to inform the candidate or her manager.  They found out through the media that the benevolent leader was in town.

Word has it that the manager, who ran in the last civic election in Vancouver against the neo-communist “COPE” party of former Vancouver Mayor and now Liberal Senator Larry (“conservatives are ‘barbarians” ) Campbell, was shunned by the Liberals at Campbell’s mighty direction.  The claim (by the campaign manager) is that the new Liberal Senator sent word down from on high (and as usual, since we’re talking about liberals, by “on high” I mean the pot-smoking kind) that this riding should simply be shunned.  And so, it would seem, it was.  It came to be.  And it was bad.

In another embarrassment and indication of disorganization and slipshod administration, the campaign signs and posters were delivered to the campaign office from the Liberals with the candidate’s name misspelled.

John Cummins, ConservativeOn purpose?

Who knows.

They just won’t say.

I have heard many similar reports from across Canada.  Liberals failing to show up for rallies, not taking lawn signs, campaign offices half empty, phone banks sitting vacant, having to scurry around giving away tickets to events just to fill seats, and dejected volunteers.

Delta-Richmond East is and has been quite solidly Conservative for many years, with the good John Cummins leading the way as the MP for four terms so far.  It can’t be an easy cruise for Liberals in that riding.

Darn the luck.
