Apparently Alberta Liberals are contemplating changing their name from “Liberal” to something else—anything but “Liberal”. Who could blame them? I wonder if other provincial siblings of the Liberal Party of Canada will ponder the same move. The BC Liberals are already separate from the federal party, but they could and probably should be next to change their name (I respect the BC Liberals—they’ve been a positive force for change and have done wonders for the province of BC—so right away you can see the difference).
How embarrassing this must be for the federal Liberals in Canada.
The leader of what’s now known as the Liberal Party of Alberta is open to suggestions, he says. And let’s face it—that’s just a fun prospect.
EDMONTON – It might be time for the Alberta Liberal party to change its name and further distance itself from the federal Liberals, party Leader Kevin Taft suggested Monday.
Taft said running under the Liberal banner is hard enough in Alberta, but the damning testimony leaking out of the Gomery inquiry into the federal sponsorship scandal, if true, could “forever change the political landscape” in Canada and limit the possibility of an opposition party finally toppling the Tories.
Taft, who has never belonged to the federal Liberal party, said he is open for the first time to suggestions on how Alberta Liberals can effectively distance themselves from the growing scandal that could destroy the federal Liberals.
“I’ve resisted (changing the name), but my resistance on that is down right now, to be honest with you,” he said, adding that the party has a glorious century-long history in the province.
“As the leader, I have to ask myself how long do we hang on that? I wouldn’t have said that even a week ago, but my resistance to people who raise that is down right now.”
I wonder if the Liberal Party of Canada will want to change their name!
