ARAB satellite television network Al Jazeera plans to spend up to US$30 million (US$1 = RM3.80) to launch an English-language news channel by the end of 2005, a spokesman for the network said yesterday.
The Qatar-based broadcaster will hire more than 300 people and operate out of three regional centres, including Kuala Lumpur as its Asian hub, Jihad Ballout said by telephone from Doha.
“We plan to spend US$25 to US$30 million initially,” Ballout said. “We hope to go on the air in November next year.”
Malaysia currently chairs both the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), which groups 57 Muslim states, and the 116-member Non-Aligned Movement of developing nations.
The network has said that the new channel, to be called Al Jazeera International, will try to counteract what it says unbalanced reporting from Western networks such as CNN and BBC.
