Conservatives in Alberta are arranging and re-arranging flowers, with the idea of creating a new political powerhouse to steer Alberta onto a conservative track. They’ve chosen “Wildrose Alliance” as the name of the new party if Alberta Alliance members agree to merge with the Wildrose Party. Either way, that’s about the coolest name for a political party I’ve heard in ages.
And they got that from their official provincial flower no less. (As a hawkish, non-pansy-like right-winger, I’m not thrilled with that flower pedigree —better they choose the party name from something a tad more masculine like a rock or a fearsome bird of prey, but anyway, it still sounds cool…)
POSSIBLE NEW PARTY NAMES ACROSS THE COUNTRY:
Based on official provincial flower or trees or symbols
• In BC, they’d have to assume the Dogwood Party. You can just predict the various sobriquets: “The Dog Party”. “The Dogs”. “Feed the dogs!” Or “Give the Dogs a bone!”. (I don’t know what that means either but half of BC is high on pot, so it could be “munchie”-related…)
• Saskachistan would have to go with Lily Alliance. Purdy flowers again. Apropos of the left.
• Manitoba would have the Crocus Alliance. “That party’s a croc!” (Would cause confusion with the NDP).
• Ontario would be the Trillium Alliance. Sounds like a party of pinhead liberals in lab coats. Hey! Perfect!
• The Nation of Quebec—well they’re different. Move on.
• New Brunswick: Purple Violet Alliance. Sounds like a needy, whiny boy-band. (A not-particularly-masculine one.) Perfect.
• Newfoundland and Labrador: Pitcher Plant Party. Huh? But it suits them inasmuch as we can’t understand half of what they say anyway.
• Prince Edward Island: The Lady’s Slipper Party. Perfect for the liberal-leftists over there. Due punishment.
• Nova Scotia: The Mayflower Alliance. I believe we have a winner! They’d win based only on the name of the party, no matter what they stood for.
