HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY
Read these stories and appreciate what mothers everywhere do for their families today and every day.
What’s mom worth?
Four mothers add up all their jobs. The result? If you had to pay her, you couldn’t afford her…Vicky Ness would often find herself at a loss when someone asked her what she did all day. As a stay-at-home mother in Winnipeg, raising a seven-year-old daughter with a military husband away for long stretches, she knew she was often so busy she’d fall into bed exhausted at night.
…Now, however, she has a pretty good sense of the myriad jobs she performs in a single day—and exactly what it would cost to replace her: $562.50 a day.
..On this weekend, filled as it is with platitudes about how mothers are priceless, it seems a good time to consider the cold hard figures applied to what a mother’s work is worth.
…FP Weekend asked four mothers across Canada to keep a log of everything they do, charting their various jobs connected with mothering. The women: a full-time consultant in Toronto with two children; a Calgary mother of seven who works part-time at home; a stay-at-home mother with one child in Winnipeg; and a part-time teacher with one child in Hamilton. All kept track of the time they spent on jobs as routine as making children’s beds, as unusual as organizing emergency household repairs.
…The women involved in our small-scale survey found themselves heartened by the experience of keeping a daily tally of their life’s work.
…In its annual calculation of the value of the work that mothers do, Salary.com took the salary levels of 10 jobs that fit into the modern mother’s job description and came up with a formula for how much mothers should be paid.
…That survey, released earlier this week, determined that stay-at-home mothers should earn US$134,121, while working mothers should be paid US$85,876 for their “mom jobs” on top of the workplace salary they already receive.
