“Jump the shark”: The origin of the expression alludes to a hideously stupid scene in the popular TV series “Happy Days”, when the writers clearly ran out of ideas and had its popular character, Fonzie (“The Fonz”), on water skis, and he literally jumps over a shark (then I’m pretty sure he said his trademark “heyyy”), signaling the end of any presumption or allusion of fresh ideas.
According to Wikipedia, “Many have noted the shark episode as the moment when they realized the show was no longer worth watching, when it became impossible to maintain a certain suspension of disbelief as this scene was considered unrealistic and of poor quality.”
It’s when they’ve got nothing else, they realize the end is nigh, and so nothing is too ridiculous.
This occurred yesterday on the state-run CBC division of the liberal-left, when, during a serious discussion concerning our upcoming election, Liberal Party strategist John (“yes I agree they’ll spend it on beer and popcorn”) Duffy tacitly admitted he’s out of gas, appealed to the moron vote, which he seems to think is every vote, and jumped the shark.
