Liberals mocked Conservatives during election for “aircraft carriers” promise; And now?

Actual still-capture from Liberal Campaign 2004 TV ad…. well, and now, the Liberals are talking about buying some “aircraft carriers” that are exactly the size, type and model the Conservative Party was saying that Canada badly needed, during the last election campaign.  See the story, below.

UPDATE:

Here’s an actual (VIDEO) copy of one of the Liberal Party’s mendacious “Hidden Agenda” TV ads from campaign 2004.  After saying the Conservatives would have sent troops to Iraq (they say it like it is a negative), they start right in on on the “scary” Conservatives’ “threat” to buy “aircraft carriers”.  Then it moves to the lie about gun control (in which they use subliminal techniques and fire a handgun right at you in an act of atrocious violence even for the Liberanos)—despite the fact that handguns, which is what they show on the ad, have had to be registered for the past 60 years or something and have nothing whatever to do with the Liberals’ long-gun registry scandal.  Then onto pollution matters, in which it’s now been proven that the U.S. under Bush is doing much better than Canada under the Liberals.  Then they move onto other lies and scare-mongering.  The whole ad campaign was nothing but a huge lie, and nothing has changed whatsoever.
(Yes, this movie file is housed on our ConservativeGroundswell.com server—do not be concerned).

Of course they’re not exactly “aircraft carriers” that the Conservatives were “threatening to buy”, which is why I’ve put “aircraft carriers” in quotes up to now —merely troop, equipment and helicopter landing craft, but boy-oh-boy it sure sounded cool during the election to accuse Harper of having a “hidden agenda” and wanting to buy “aircraft carriers”, “instead of health care for the kids”, huh?!

Here’s a little bit out of Hansard from last year—a quote by Conservative Jay Hill (Prince George—Peace River):

I believe it is well known and should be known even to the new member in the House of Commons that the Liberal Party of Canada made a big issue in the last election campaign of lying to Canadians—that is the fact of the matter—in its advertisements when it said that the Conservative Party of Canada was advocating that we buy aircraft carriers. I think all of us remember the images of its TV ads that showed nuclear aircraft carriers. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Part of the Conservative platform, when it came to refurbishing and rebuilding our military in this country so that it could return to its proud heritage, was the commitment to build a new class of ships, hybrid carriers. They are a cargo ship capable of carrying troops and equipment with a flight deck on top for helicopters. They would be more akin to a freighter with a flight deck. Yet the Liberal Party of Canada perpetrated this great deception on the Canadian people that the Conservatives were advocating building nuclear aircraft carriers. It was simply ridiculous and I want to take the opportunity to set the record straight.

Now read the news item from today:

HALIFAX (CP) – The Canadian navy is drafting a plan to acquire two large amphibious assault ships capable of transporting thousands of troops and dozens of tanks and trucks across the seas.

The idea, which merited a passing reference in last spring’s defence policy statement, is expected to go before the federal Treasury Board next year for consideration, said the director of the navy’s maritime requirements.

“We’re looking at being more engaged on a global scale,” said Capt. Peter Ellis.

“I think it’s a critical requirement, especially if we’re going to conduct operations at short notice.”

The acquisition of the ships, that can resemble small aircraft carriers, are in addition to the navy’s $2.1-billion project to build three regular supply ships.

As yet, the navy has not come up with a price tag for the landing ships.

Ellis said the amphibious ships and supply boats serve different purposes.

The transports, complete with a detachment of attack helicopters and landing craft, give the army an ability to land on an empty or partially defended beach anywhere in the world.

[…] Adding to [Defence analyst David] Rudd’s concern, the federal Conservatives supported the concept of the landing ships in the last election. But   Prime Minister Paul Martin dismissed the idea during the televised debate, saying Canadians had a choice between a party that supported health care and one that wanted to buy aircraft carriers.
