Wal*Mart bigger than Saskatchewan; Home Depot bigger than France

While I work, I’m also looking for the official weekly ProudToBeCanadian.ca Quote Of The Week.  I already have three nominations, and the ceremony will be a little later, but I liked one that I found just today.

I once wrote a column in which I pointed out that Saskatchewan (which I like to call “a li’l bit of the Soviet Union right here in Canada!”) is not competing very well.  As a general matter, competing is decidedly not their main goal in life.  I pointed out that America’s Wal*Mart (with branches in Saskatchewan) employs as many people as the entire population of Saskatchewan (unlike Saskatchewan), offers an excellent healthcare package with no waiting lists (unlike Saskatchewan), has a great pension plan that actually enables you to retire without being poor (unlike Saskatchewan), and offers warm, friendly places to work (unlike Saskatchewan).  And they sell products and services at a tremendous profit (unlike Saskatchewan).

Shockingly, my column did not go over very well with liberal-left Canadians, especially the neo-socialists in Saskatchewan who claimed I wasn’t being “fair”.

I also recall chatting with the President of the Fraser Institute a few weeks ago (well everybody else name-drops so I should be allowed to too!) and he saying to me and my wife that it’s amazing how many people he meets across the country who tell him they’re from Saskatchewan, originally.  (Catch the nuance?  Think about it.)

But I liked this quote from a Licia Corbella column today:

…Canada does more trade with Home Depot’s head office in Atlanta than it does with all of France.

That was a Liberal Senator, Colin Kenny, who said that to her over a chat last week.  Send your emails o’ anger to Colin Kenny, Liberal Party of Canada: [email protected]
